I know a lot of you are asking this week how Mass Effect 3 is going to end. Lord knows I am, and if you tell me I will kill you. I mean that. Someone else is going to filter comments for this journal just in case some random ass decided to spoil it before I get to play it.
On Sunday I was talking with a friend about the Mass Effect franchise and he mentioned this article. I think it pulls a bit of an Extra Credit in over exaggeration but it makes a lot of good points. There’s also a bit of a spoiler warning here if you haven’t played through the first two games.
But it was while we were discussing this article that we commented on the fact that since the series was so unique it would be great if the brand could continue some how after Mass Effect 3.
Well the obvious answer was, of course, the most horrible which was to not really end the story with Shepard and the Reapers after the third game. That would be tantamount to committing franchise suicide after openly stating for years now that the series would be a trilogy.
So what did we come up with?
For us the best thing would be to do an aftermath game. Just use the game engine from the final game with some minor tweaks and make the new game about the aftermath of the war. Have the players be able to not only pick humans but also any of the races. This would give players a lot more variety and since the creators won’t need to spend as much time on a game engine, the entire thing can be focused on dialogue and story.
Basically make the entire game about being one of the many soldiers who helps rebuild the galaxy after the war, you get mission dispatches, stuff like that. The choices made in Mass Effect 3 can also factor into the new game! Say your choices in the final game lead to one race contributing more than another, there can be racial tensions between races because of that. Certain species can suffer from almost being wiped out by Reapers as well and you have to help their supply runs to ensure their survival.
And the Paragon and Renegade system can have even more influence! Keep in mind that in a galaxy with a military that’s practically exhausted criminal syndicates and terrorist groups will rise up to take over. You can choose to use criminal elements to make your life easier or spend more time stamping them out, earning bounties on your head. Heck, make an option that you can try to unite all of the criminals in the galaxy under your banner.
And if you really want to screw with players, make it so that if you’re evil enough or far enough beyond the books have it that your own Shepard comes to hunt you down! After all, you’re just a grunt! Spectres are supposed to run down guys like you for breakfast.
Throw in some political tension and an assassination subplot and you have a really solid game. So Bioware, did I guess your next move?
So too does this work exist.
