Would you look at that? One hundred posts. One hundred instances of my writing out there.
Well, let’s cut the foreplay and hit this shit.
Last week I talked about Exalted one of my more underrated though beloved fandoms (in the grand scheme of things) but as all true Exalted fans know I left out a lot of stuff. So this will be less a guide into the RPG and more of an explanation of a lot of the backstory. As I do so though, I will explain how the average (massive air quotes there) stories go for each of the Exalted types. There aren’t any hard or fast rules on this one and these are more setting descriptions to help you find your own spin on it.
Each Exalted is the chosen warrior of a god. A long time ago the gods rebelled against their makers the Primordials. These were massive entities, some as large as entire plains of reality. Together they created what most call Creation, a single flat plane of existence in the middle of a mess of chaotic existence. In that chaos are the Fair Folk and took exception to the Primordials imposing things like rules on existence. So they invaded a lot. But most Fair Folk didn’t hold a candle to the gods.
Now among the gods stood a high council of the highest Incarnae. This group of some seven deities were led by a being known as Sol Invictus or god of the sun. Sol Invictus came to realize his life as a slave and that he and his siblings did not deserve to live so under the thrall of their parents. The Primordials did as they wanted when they wanted without consequence and Sol realized that not only were the gods forced to clean up after but the newly created humans of Creation were hurt for that lifestyle. So Sol Invictus gathered his allies and went to war. But, the gods could not attack the Primordials as they were built specifically to prevent that. So each of the strongest gods bestowed a portion of their power to a set of human followers called Exalted.
Now Sol Invictus gained two ally Primordials for his victory. Autochthon the great maker who did not want to watch his creations be destroyed by his siblings and Gaia who joined them for the love of the god/dess Luna (who sometimes switches genders because he/she can). However as the Primodrials fell they cursed the Exalted and each one was fated in one way or another to suffer. The worst were those of Sol Invictus (now known as the Unconquered Sun) known as the Solar Exalted. Eventually, as they became rulers of Creation, their own allies turned on them and slew each and every one. Over time each Solar’s essence was contained in a jade prison.
Now, half of the Primordials were slain and in being slain created such a massive scar on reality that they created an afterlife rather than just allowing souls to be reborn into creation. They became the Neverborn. The other half was imprisoned in the body of the king of Primordials. He became known as Malfeas and all became known as the Yozi.
Got me so far? Cool.
Autochthon buggered off because he just didn’t trust anyone anymore and created his own world with his own followers. Meanwhile time passed until the Fair Folk staged a massive attack on the world. A single Dragon Blooded woman managed to find an ancient Solar defensive system and force them all back. She became known as the Empress and she ruled Creation (most of it) with an iron fist and through her children. Any Exalted that wasn’t one of her own kind she had assassinated and stored in the jade prison. The whole thing was run quite efficiently. Until the day she disappeared. Which was the same day the jade prison broke.
You start the game a couple of years after that.
And now, a deeper look at the Exalted.
The Solar Exalted
Among all of the Exalted these are the mightiest and the truest heroes. They were charged with leading the other Exalted into a golden age. Now they are outcaste feared by those who do not remember them, hated by those that do. Each Solar carries the weight of his past lives and must choose to redeem themselves, recapture their former glory or simply strive to save Creation. They possess the strongest charms and the highest levels of sorcery. There are three hundred Solars. Sort of.
The Lunar Exalted
For every Solar there exists a Lunar mate. Some are lifelong companions, some are valued aids and some are much more. The Lunars the children of the god/dess Luna and are blessed with the ability to change shape and can learn animal forms. They exist on the boarders of creation in exile after the fall of the Solars. They now safeguard Creation from many of the horrors of the Fair Folk and form pack societies. Each Lunar has a tell, a leftover from their favoured animal form that they carry with them. Some have chosen to help the Solars, others have chosen to make them pay. Some have just decided to not be a myth anymore.
The Sidreal Exalted
Each of the five Castes of the Sidreal Exalted is the blessed champion of one of five maidens of destiny. The Sidreals have the strongest martial arts and have the ability to see into fate. They were the ones who orchestrated the fall of the Solars having predicted that the Solars would turn mad and destroy all of creation. Times have changed. Some Sidreals have decided to aid the Solars and mentor them, others keep the position that the Solars must be cast down. Others simply wish to help alter the sequence of events in Creation for the better and keep harmony among all things. Anyone who knows of the Sidreals though, knows enough not to trust them. There are only one hundred Sidreals.
The Terrestrial Exalted
When the gods went to war they lacked the raw troop power needed to take on the gods. Gaia responded by creating the Terrestrial Exalted. Drawing power from the elements each Terrestrial inherits their power from their lineage rather than being chosen by their god like all other Exalted. The Terrestrial Exalted are now named Dragon Blooded and rule creation after slaying the Solars. They stand at the highest level of society and even the Empress is one of them. Terrestrials can have massive political battles, be generals at war, simple guardians of an outpost city or hunt other Exalted. Some, however, are starting to question the status quo with the disappearance of the Empress.
The Abyssal Exalted
When the Jade Prison broke the Neverborn’s agents managed to capture one hundred and fifty Solars. One hundred were used for a special purpose. Converting them into agents of death these one hundred souls are now twisted reflections of the Solars marred in death and nihilism. Each Abyssal servers one of thirteen Deathlords who answer directly to the Neverborn. Each Abyssal is chosen specifically to be an agent of death whether to safeguard the world of the Neverborn or take Creation. Some, however, don’t like the idea of being a slave and some have decided to rebel. There are massive consequences though, for those actions.
The Infernal Exalted
The remaining fifty Solars kidnapped by the Neverborn were given to the Yozis as part of a deal. These Infernal Exalted or Green Sun Princes are as warped as the Abyssals are fatalistic. They have been tempered for chaos and are dedicated to liberating their masters from Malfeas and making everyone pay for it. As they grow stronger they become more and more like their Yozi masters.
The Alchemical Exalted
When Autochthon left creation he decided he’d make his own Exalted. Machine Exalted. The Alchemical Exalted are each made from magical metals and materials and safeguard Autochthon’s realm and its people from harm while keeping the people in line to work harder and stronger. As each Exalt grows in strength they also grow in size until they become massive Colossi and finally newfound cities that people can live in. They are the keepers of society and protect all from harm.
So, what do you feel like playing?
So too does this work exist.
